Zombie Hunters Demo

Have you ever wanted to be part of the game development process? Then you're in luck! California game designer Anthony Bennett is playtesting his board game, Zombie Hunters! Zombie Hunters is a track-style board game (like Monopoly) where the players race from the start (outbreak) to the end (cure). As you go along the track, you pick up weapons, equipment, and loot, and (of course) fight zombies, survivors and the other players. And if you get infected? No big deal! Now you get to chase the other players and infect survivors.

Heroine's Journey

Many are familiar with Joseph Campbell's theory of the hero's journey, the idea that every man through myth and literature grows to adulthood while battling his dark alter-ego. Valerie explores the universal heroine's journey in ancient myths and epics from the bow-wielding Anat to the crone-goddess Spider Grandmother, upsetting popular notions of the passive, helpless girl. We'll mostly look at modern children's fantasy, one of the best places to find the journey. Coraline, The Hunger Games, The Golden Compass, A Wrinkle in Time, the works of Tamora Pierce, and The Wizard of Oz are wonderful places to find this classic pattern. Like the hero's journey, this pattern is useful for those who enjoy reading and analyzing literature, and also those who want to write it, especially fantasy and coming of age stories.

Urban Fantasy: Why is it Big Now? What Will Replace it When It's Gone?

Urban Fantasy has been around for long time, but it is everywhere we look now. From popular television shows like "Lost Girl," "True Blood," and "Grimm" to whole new sections in the bookstore and on-line. What has spurred society's interest in the fantastic? Did we just get tired of fighting dragons and chasing unicorns? Are we still reacting to the fear that the enemy could be our next door neighbor? Is it fandom's answer to reality TV? Or is there something connecting on a deeper level? Come explore the genre as it relates to the sudden interest for modern audiences. Once we have an idea of what drives viewers and readers to the genre, can we then speculate as to what will come next?

The End of Category in the New Publishing

Publishers and Booksellers have long been obsessed with category, to the extent that many fine manuscripts have been rejected because they cross categories and genres or won't neatly pigeonhole.
